The Arrival

Sickness becomes us...

We have arrived and it only seems appropriate to post a message about this. However, we're both sick and we're not really in the mood to be sitting upright... but we'll truck along and post a message.

Yesterday before leaving, we finished up all our last minute to-dos... Note to self: stop leaving things to the last minute!!! This was about the time K. started developing a sore throat. We did get everything done and the last stressful thing we had to deal with was hoping our luggage didn't go over the weight limit. We were certain it did, but it didn't! Yippee!

The flight went well even though we had seats right in front of the bathrooms, and K's throat was killing her, and it was 13.5 hours of travelling. We managed to sleep and the flight actually seemed really short.

The cab ride from the airport to our apartment was much shorter than expected and a major rip off (over $30 for half an hour). If we had known the country/city better, then maybe we would have been comfortable taking the bus... That would have saved us $28!?

We waited about 10 minutes for the apartment people to meet us and we were let in. The place is actually nicer than expected... although super cold!!! It's only starting to get warmer here and there isn't really any heat in the apartment. We slept with 4 layers of blankets and didn't break a sweat!? We might look into renting this place a little longer... we'll see.

We did manage to walk around a bit last night and get our bearings. We live in a working-class area and it's great. It feels safer than being in a tourist area. We bought our first empanadas and a little tub of dulce de leche with crackers (YUM!).

We are currently in the process of breaking our one rule (no separating) - Jorge has gone out to the store since K is too sick to move... Jorge's already been gone longer than K is comfortable with... back now :)

First observations:
- beautiful city, but it does look 3rd world
- the pollution (especially the smell of it) is worse than we remember in Bangkok, Thailand!?
- there are lovely cafes everywhere
- the Argentinean people do not smile when walking down the streets and they stare (not only at Jorge for the obvious reason)
- we've already encountered the impossibility of obtaining centavos (cents) and smaller change (you are always asked if you have smaller change and they don't want to give you their change)

That's all for now!
